SECRETS: FACT OR FICTION?

In this age of web-based information and entertainment, twenty-four-hour news, cell phones and portable video, we are deluged with information. Often we lead such busy lives we barely find time to reflect on the greater world around us, much less our interior selves, and the emotions, illusions, fears and dreams that make each of us unique.
Last summer, nine American and Canadian authors learned of the results of a survey entitled Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, funded and prepared by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and reacted with well-founded horror. The "report documents a national crisis," stated NEA Chairman Diana Gioia during a news conference at the New York Public Library in June of last year. "The decline in reading among every segment of the adult population reflects a general collapse in advanced literacy."
The authors were members of a group of authors, including self-published, small press and traditional press, who corresponded to share ideas for publicity and promotion of their books. They saw in the survey the results of their own frustration — that books are becoming harder and harder to sell to a populace which spends its few free hours in front of video games, or watching television and movies.
They, including Cie and I, decided that if readers could buy a book of stories short enough to fit into their daily lives, then reading might become an enjoyable part of their day. We made sure that the stories were about the same length as a reader might find in a magazine. So was born SECRETS, FACT OR FICTION?
But to add a little intrigue, each story in this book may or may not be TRUE. We're challenging the readers to guess which is which, and giving you a whole year to decide. In the back of this book is an entry ballot that readers can use to choose which of the stories is true. The winner will be selected at random from all of the correct ballots in April, 2006. That person will receive an autographed copy of one book from EACH author in the collection — a total of nine books!
